Sustainable florist: for a bouquet with minimal environmental impact
At Amsterdam Flowers we believe it is very important that the pleasure our customers experience from our bouquets does not come at the expense of the future of the planet. That is why we do our utmost to incorporate sustainability into everything we do. We are doing well, as evidenced by our gold certification from the Barometer Duurzame Bloemist. More sustainably grown flowers
Let's not beat around the bush: there's a lot wrong with flower growing. Many growers use unnecessary amounts of pesticides and fertilisers, which affects soil and water quality. You can also see that good working conditions are often not a priority in the sector.
We are certainly not under the illusion that we can solve all the problems in floriculture overnight. But we do believe that as a medium-sized florist - together with our national network - we can contribute to positive change. By raising the bar for ourselves, step by step, we are helping the whole sector to move up.
The main way we do this is by paying close attention to how the flowers are grown when we buy them. There are certificates for this, such as MPS-A+, Organic and On the way to PlanetProof. These certifications guarantee that the flowers are grown in a more sustainable way and that the growers have their house in order when it comes to working conditions. And as these certifications become more stringent, the flowers become more sustainable and socially responsible. Not every type of flower is always available with these certificates, but the majority of the flowers we buy are certified. This is also necessary to maintain our own Gold certification.
What else you can expect from a sustainable florist
In addition to sustainably grown flowers, we also do our best in other areas to minimise the environmental and social impact of our bouquets. Here are some of the ways you can hold us accountable:
➤ We pack each bouquet in an environmentally friendly way, with minimal use of plastic and certainly no glitter.
➤ Funeral flowers are made from more environmentally friendly floral foam.
➤ We do not use chlorine based cleaning products.
➤ We separate our waste.
➤ We deliver bouquets using clean transport such as bicycles and electric vehicles.
➤ We provide a safe working environment where there is room for everyone who loves flowers.
